Merchant and Diaspora Networks in Early Modern History: the Dutch, British and German Communities in Eighteenth-Century Venice
Uniting theory with practice, this module explored the networks of Dutch, British and German merchant communities in one of the early modern Mediterranean’s leading port cities, Venice, during an often-neglected era in Mediterranean history, the eighteenth century. What kind of networks did the respective three communities develop? How did these networks operate in and try to imitate their host-society? What roles did confession and nationality play in this process? What sense, as a concept, can we make of the early modern cosmopolitan city?
